DRIVE-RM PROJECT LAUNCHED: A NEW ERA IN REGENERATIVE MEDICINE
22/05/2025
On May 15, 2025, the DRIVE-RM (Driving Regenerative Medicine) consortium was officially launched—a major Dutch initiative in the field of regenerative medicine. Funded with €37.5 million through the prestigious NWO SUMMIT grant, the project unites over 25 research groups from institutions including UMC Utrecht, Utrecht University, TU Eindhoven, Maastricht University, and the Hubrecht Institute.
DRIVE-RM focuses on materials-driven regeneration, using smart, biofabricated biomaterials that guide the body’s natural repair processes. The consortium aims to develop new therapeutic strategies for chronic conditions such as kidney failure, heart disease, and musculoskeletal disorders.
Prof. Jos Malda, head of the MaldaLab, is one of the five scientific leads of the project, alongside Marianne Verhaar, Carlijn Bouten, Jeroen Bakkers, and Clemens van Blitterswijk. In a LinkedIn post, Prof. Malda highlighted the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration—bridging biology, engineering, and medicine—to accelerate the translation of cutting-edge science into clinical practice.
